What's New!

Keep up to date with all the crazy happenings here at FHF!

5/5/10

I have lots of news to report - some good, some bad.  Sadly, we had to make the decision to put both Brio and Lily to sleep last month.  Brio had too much scar tissue built up from his old injury for his leg to ever heal enough for him to stay even pasture sound.  He was having to spend more and more time inside to stay sound, and he was not happy - letting him go was the best decision for him.  We tried for four years to get him sound, but sometimes you have to know when to quit.  As you all know, Lily fought a long battle with founder.  She came here in terrible shape last summer - she could barely walk, and she was so emaciated.  She was showing a lot of improvement for a while this spring, but in March her left front leg swelled up and became very sore - we think her suspensory ligament gave out.  We gave her four weeks of wrapping and special care, but she showed no improvement and she was in a lot of pain, so we let her go.  She was cheery up until the end, and I'll never forget how courageous she was.

And with death comes birth - please welcome our newest addition to the far, Radar (photos coming very soon)!  Amelie surprised us in the middle of the afternoon with this little bouncing baby boy.  She foaled unassisted, and both mom and baby are doing extremely well!

Lastly, riding lessons are finally starting up again!  Please check the Riding Lessons page for updates.

Ok, I have a LOT of news to report.  I don't even know where to begin!  I suppose I'll start with letting you know that lessons should be starting back up shortly.  Sadie is still slightly lame and it's a mystery to the vet - we can't find anything wrong.  But she isn't moving 100% sound so we are still trying to figure this one out.  I've been searching far and wide for replacements for all three of my schoolies - Minerva, Pepper, and Sadie.  One thing I've always been proud of is how wonderful my school horses are, and I'm very particular about the horse I teach on.  It's not easy trying to find three horses as good as the three I've taught on for the last few years, but I'm trying- please be patient and know it will be worth the wait.

We've learned that our newest addition to the farm, Amelie the Haflinger, is in foal!  We don't know when she's due so I'm watching her like a hawk for any changes.  She's definitely growing a belly, as you can see.

Speaking of snow!  We have a lot of snow!  The horses are enjoying it, here are a few photos from this past week.

Let's see... what else... oh!  Of course!  I took Secret to her very first show on January 23.  She won her class (ssshhhh... she was the only one in the class but don't tell anybody - she's proud of her blue ribbon!)  She went to Majestic Farm and did the Sporthorse In Hand - ages 3 and under class.  She scored an impressive 72.5%.  She behaved perfectly minus a small trailering incident in which she somehow ended up in front of the chest bar (eek!  she's ok though, thankfully).  The judge and many others were very impressed by how quiet she was and how good her manners were considering her age and the fact that it was her very first trip off the farm.  We will be attending the next show at Majestic Farm (it's just a mile up the road from FHF) on February 20th if anyone wants to come cheer her on, just get in touch with me and I can give you the details.  I guess that's it for the news, I'll leave you with some photos of Secret's first show experience.
